- Check the ceilings in every top-floor room and closet for new stains
- Look at the attic underside on a bright day for pinholes of light and for damp insulation
- Clean gutters and run a hose to confirm downspouts drain away from the foundation
- Check that gutter guards are still seated and not holding water
Fall checklist (before the leaves come down)
- Trim branches back at least 6 feet from the roof
- Clean gutters again once the leaves are down, usually mid-November in North Jersey
- Look at all flashing: chimney, vents, skylights, where the roof meets a wall
- Reseal exposed nail heads on ridge caps and vents
- Make sure attic vents and soffit vents are clear so warm air escapes; this prevents ice dams
- Check the chimney cap and crown for cracks
