A one-day acrylic system is a new base and molded wall panels, glued to fresh cement board over new plumbing. In and done in one to two days, seamless walls that never need grout, and the lowest price — about $6,000 to $12,000 for a tub-to-shower. Colors and patterns are limited, and the walls are plastic; a sharp object can scratch them.
A tile conversion takes five to seven days: mud or foam base, membrane waterproofing, the tile you chose, glass, niche, bench. It's $12,000 to $25,000, it looks like the bathroom in the magazine, and it's fully repairable for the life of the house. The chains sell only acrylic because it's fast for them. We do both, and we'll tell you when the cheaper one is the right one.
Liners and wraps — why we don't put a shell over your old tub
A tub liner is a plastic shell glued over your old tub. A wall wrap is the same thing over your old tile. They're sold as 'installed in a day, no demo' — and they trap water. The shell never seals perfectly at the drain and the overflow; water gets underneath, the floor of the liner squishes, it smells, and by the time you find out, the old tub under it has rusted through. We take the old tub out, fix whatever the floor and walls have been hiding, and install a new base and new walls over new backer board. That's still a one- to two-day job. It just doesn't rot.

How do I clean an acrylic tub or shower without wrecking it?
Warm water, a mild liquid cleaner and a soft cloth or sponge handle almost everything, and a weekly wipe beats a monthly scrub. Stay away from abrasive powders, scouring pads, acetone, paint thinner and anything with grit — they scratch the surface permanently, and once it's scratched it holds soap scum forever. Skip drain cleaners with harsh solvents too; call us and we'll clear it properly.
When can I actually use the new shower?
With a panel system, usually the next morning — the silicone at the corners and the base needs about 24 hours to cure before it gets soaked. A tiled shower needs the grout and waterproofing to cure, so we'll normally tell you to wait two to three days, and we give you the exact date in writing before the crew leaves. If you have only one bathroom, tell us at the consultation and we'll sequence the work around it.

Should I keep a tub for resale?
Keep one somewhere in the house if you can. Convert the primary or main bath to a shower and leave the hall bath with a tub — or the other way around. If the house has only one bathroom, a tub-and-shower combo is the safe choice for resale.
Do I need a permit?
Replacing a tub with a shower in the same spot involves plumbing, and most New Jersey towns want a plumbing permit for it. Moving a drain or a wall always does. We pull it and meet the inspector.
Can you convert a shower stall into a tub?
