The best value in New Jersey. Never needs paint, shrugs off salt air, comes in every profile from Dutch lap to shakes. Get the thicker .044-inch panel or an insulated panel — the thin builder-grade stuff is what warps and rattles. Typical whole-house replacement: $11K–$22K.
Cement, sand and cellulose pressed into boards — James Hardie is the brand most people know. It looks like painted wood, doesn't burn, doesn't dent from hail, and lasts 40+ years. It costs more up front, usually $22K–$38K+ for a whole house, and needs repainting every 12–15 years. Worth it on a house you're keeping.

New siding over rotten sheathing and no wrap is a paint job on a wet wall. When we strip a house, we replace soft sheathing by the sheet — priced in your quote, with photos if we find more — then wrap it, tape the seams, and flash every window and door with self-adhered membrane so the water that gets behind the siding (some always does) runs down and out, not in.
Then the siding goes on the way the manufacturer says: nailed loose enough to move, not tight; overlapped away from the prevailing wind; J-channel that drains; kick-out flashing where a roof meets a wall so gutter water doesn't run down inside the siding. That last one is missing on half the houses we look at, and it's the cause of most rotted corners.
We measure every wall, check for rot at the corners and under the windows, and count the trim, soffit and fascia that go with it. Itemized price on the spot: panel brand and thickness, wrap, flashing, trim, sheathing allowance by the sheet, disposal.

In New Jersey, replacing siding on a one- or two-family home is usually ordinary maintenance with no permit required. Replacing a lot of sheathing or changing structure can change that, and some towns have their own rules — we check before we start.
Yes, and it's the right order. New windows go in first, get flashed into the wrap, and the siding and trim finish around them. One crew, one setup, one cleanup.
Some. The foam backing adds a little R-value, makes the panel stiffer and quieter, and hides an uneven wall. It costs more than standard vinyl and less than fiber cement. We'll price both if you're on the fence.
Good vinyl, 30 to 40 years. Fiber cement, 40 to 50 with a repaint every 12–15 years. The wrap and flashing behind it decide whether the sheathing lasts that long too — which is why we don't skip them.
Three to six days for a typical New Jersey single-family house, longer for a big colonial, heavy trim detail or a lot of rotted sheathing we uncover. We work one elevation at a time so the house is never left open overnight, and you get a photo update text every workday. The finish date is in your contract before we start.
Once a year, rinse it with a garden hose and a soft brush, working bottom to top with mild soap on the green film that grows on north-facing walls. Skip the pressure washer — it drives water behind the panels and voids most manufacturer warranties. Keep mulch and soil a few inches below the bottom course so nothing wicks up into it.
More than just the panels. Once the old siding is off we inspect the sheathing and replace anything soft, then install house wrap, new flashing at windows, doors and rooflines, and new J-channel and trim. Rotted sheathing is priced and photographed before we cover it, and nothing extra gets charged without your signature on a change order.
If your siding is sound wood or fiber cement, painting is the cheaper, smarter move and we'll say so. Painting is the wrong answer when the wall behind it is wet, when the boards are cupped or rotted, or when you're on the third repaint in fifteen years and the moisture keeps coming back. Paint hides the problem for five years; siding with proper house wrap and flashing fixes it.
