Stainless micro-mesh over an aluminum frame: fine enough to stop tassels, seeds and needles, strong enough to take a ladder against it, and it doesn't rust. This is the one we install on most houses.
Perforated aluminum screen: the holes are bigger, so helicopters and needles get through and small stuff sits on top. Cheaper. Fine for a yard with only big-leaf trees.
Reverse-curve covers: water wraps over a curved lip and leaves fall off the edge. They look clean, but in a hard rain — the kind we get here — water overshoots the curve and pours off the front. Oak tassels stick to them. We don't install these.
Foam inserts and brush guards: the foam grows seeds and moss and holds water against the gutter; the brush fills with needles and can't be cleaned. We don't install these either — and we pull a lot of them out.
Plastic snap-in screens from the hardware store: they get brittle, they lift in wind, and leaves sit on top. Better than nothing for about two seasons.

Micro-mesh guards run about $8 to $25 per linear foot installed, so a typical 150-to-200-foot house lands between $1,200 and $5,000. Re-pitching, resealing or fascia repair is priced separately and only if your gutters need it. National guard chains often quote two to three times that for the same mesh.
Micro-mesh does. Tassels and small leaves sit on top and blow off or dry and crumble; you'll rinse the mesh from the ground once a year or so. Wide screens and reverse-curve covers don't — the tassels wrap them.
No. Ice dams come from heat leaking into the attic and melting snow that refreezes at the cold eave. Guards don't change that. A clogged gutter makes a dam worse, and a clean guarded gutter helps a little. If you get dams every winter, the real fix is attic air sealing and insulation — we do that too.
Rarely, and from the ground. A hose rinse once a year knocks pollen and grit off the mesh. What you won't do is scoop sludge from the gutter or clear a packed downspout.
Yes, if they're sound. We check pitch, hangers and fascia first. If the gutters are rusted, sagging or hung on spikes in soft wood, we'll show you and price new seamless gutters with the guard — it's usually cheaper together than guards now and gutters later.
