How it works: from your first call to the final walkthrough

Most contractor horror stories start the same way: nobody told the homeowner what happens next. So here's the whole job in the order it actually happens — from the moment you call to the day you sign off. Read it once and you'll know more about the process than most people know halfway through their own remodel.

A new luxury black-and-white modern home on a wooded Bergen County lot

Step 1 — The first call (or text)

A real person answers. Day, night, weekend — not a phone menu, not a form that emails someone on Monday. The call takes a few minutes, and we ask four things:

What's going on?

Broken, or planned? A leak under the sink is one lane; a new kitchen is the other. If you can, text a photo to the same number. A photo tells us more than five minutes of describing it, and it means the crew brings the right parts.

Where are you?

Your town. We're based in Paramus and cover all 21 New Jersey counties, so the answer changes who we send and how fast — never whether we come.

When do you need it?

Today, this week, or 'before the holidays.' Be honest. 'No rush' is a fine answer, and it helps us give the truly urgent calls the first slots.

How do you want to hear from us?

Call or text. Most people pick text — the appointment confirmation, the on-the-way message and the daily photo updates all come the same way.

Two lanes: emergency or planned

Emergency lane — something is leaking, broken or dangerous

You get a live person and same-day dispatch. In Bergen, Passaic, Hudson, Essex and Morris we're often there within the hour; everywhere else in New Jersey, same day with an honest arrival window. We tell you what to shut off while the truck is moving. The price is approved before we work — even at 2am — and it's the same price at 2am as at 2pm.

Planned lane — a remodel, a roof, an addition, a list of repairs

We book a free in-home consultation, usually same-day or next-day. No salesman comes. The person who shows up is from the crew that will price the job and build it.

Step 2 — The free in-home consultation

Plan on about 60 minutes. Here's what happens in them.

We measure and inspect

Tape, level, moisture meter, flashlight. We open the access panel, look at the drain stack, check the electrical panel, look under the tub, walk the roof if it's a roof. We inspect like builders before we quote, because that's the only honest way to promise the number won't move.

You get a written, itemized price on the spot

Not an estimate. A price — line by line: demo, permits, materials by tier, labor, haul-away, cleanup — with a start date and a finish date. It's in your hand before we leave.

You get a plan

For remodels, a design plan built around your budget: the layout, the finishes, what we'd change and what we'd leave alone. It's yours to keep even if you never hire us.

You get room to think

We don't sit at your table waiting for a yes. Read it, sleep on it, show it to your brother-in-law. Call when you're ready — the number doesn't change because you took a week.

Step 3 — Scheduling

Repairs and small jobs

Same-day and next-day. Call before noon and we're often there today. You get an arrival window by text, then a text when we're on the way.

Projects

Your contract has a start date and a finish date. Between signing and the start we order the long-lead items — cabinets, windows, tile, a tub, a door — so the crew never stands around waiting on a delivery. The week before, you get a call with the exact start time and a short list of what to clear out.

Step 4 — The build

One dedicated licensed crew. No rented subcontractors. The same foreman every day — and you'll know his name before day one.

Day one

Plastic and zipper doors seal off the work area. Floors from the front door to the room get covered. We show you where the water shutoff is and where we'll stage tools. Then the work starts.

Every workday

A photo update text before the crew leaves: what got done, what's happening tomorrow, and anything you need to pick or decide. You never have to wonder whether anyone showed up.

Every night

The site gets swept and the path out gets cleared. You should be able to walk through your own house in socks.

If something changes

See Step 6. The short version: nothing gets added without your signature.

Step 5 — Permits and inspections

In New Jersey most real work needs a permit — plumbing, electrical, structural, a new roof, a furnace. We pull them. We schedule the inspections. We're the ones standing next to the inspector, and you get the passed inspection in your hand instead of a to-do list.

It's in the price. There's never a 'plus permit' line at the end, and we never ask you to pull a permit as the homeowner — that's what contractors do when they can't. If a town wants a drawing, we make the drawing.

Step 6 — Changes

You want something added

Say the word. You get the price for the change in writing, you sign a one-page change order, and it goes on the schedule. No 'yeah, go ahead' in the hallway that turns into a mystery line on the last invoice.

We find something hidden

A rotted joist under the tub. A cast-iron drain that crumbled when we touched it. You get photos and priced options the same day — usually by text, that evening. You pick one and sign, or you say no and the price stays exactly where it was. That's the Price-Lock Guarantee.

Step 7 — Payment

No deposit

We don't take money to start. The 'they took the deposit and disappeared' story can't happen here, because there's nothing to take.

Milestones you can see

Your contract lists each payment next to work you can walk over and look at — after demo and rough-in, after tile, after fixtures. Each payment comes after that work is done, never before. Cash, check or card, with a receipt every time.

You hold the last one

The final payment waits until the walkthrough is done and you've signed off. Not a day earlier.

Step 8 — The walkthrough

When the job's done we walk it together, item by item, with your contract in hand. Every line gets checked against what's in front of you. A cabinet door that rubs, a paint line that isn't crisp, a drawer that sticks — it gets fixed before we call the job finished. Not 'scheduled for later.'

Then you sign off and release the final payment. That's the Sign-Off Guarantee. It's why our incentive and yours point the same way: a finished job you're happy to show people.

Step 9 — After the job

The number on your contract still rings the owner. If there's a workmanship issue covered by your guarantee, you call, we come back, and we make it right. Anything we installed that carries water — pipes, valves, drains, showers, water heaters, pumps, gutters — is covered by the 5-Year Watertight Guarantee: if it leaks, cracks or fails within 5 years, we fix it and repair the damage it caused. You'll never chase us.

  • The No-Surprise Guarantee — your price is in writing, you know the plan, we stand behind our work
  • The 5-Year Watertight Guarantee — anything we install that carries water
  • The Price-Lock Guarantee — nothing changes without your signature on a written change order
  • The Sign-Off Guarantee — you hold the final payment until the item-by-item walkthrough

Straight answers

How long does the first consultation take?

About 60 minutes for most rooms and repairs. A whole-house job or an addition can run longer, because we measure everything. Either way you walk out with the written price, the plan and the finish date — we don't come back a week later with a number.

Do I have to decide on the spot?

No. The price is the same whether you sign that day or after you've thought it over, as long as the scope's the same. Take it, compare it, sleep on it. If you bring back another written quote, we'll match the scope line by line so you're comparing the same job.

What if I'm not home during the work?

Most of our customers aren't. You get the daily photo text either way, and the foreman is the same person every day, so you're never re-explaining the job to a stranger. Lockbox, door code or a key — your call.

What happens if the schedule slips?

We tell you the day we know, not the day it was due. Weather on a roof or a back-ordered window can move a date. When it does, it's in that day's photo text with the new date, and it never costs you more. Radio silence isn't a thing here.
