People put off calling a contractor because they think the free consultation is a sales visit. With a lot of companies, it is. Here's exactly what happens when First Call comes to your house — who shows up, what we look at, what you get on paper before we leave, and the things we won't do.
Booking it
Call or text (201) 676-3099. A person answers. Tell us what you're thinking about — a kitchen, a roof, a basement, a bathroom that's leaking into the dining room — and we'll set a time. Call before noon and we're often there today; otherwise it's usually tomorrow. You'll get a text when we're on the way. One person comes, not a team of two who take turns.
Who shows up
The foreman who would run your job, or Alex. Nobody here works on commission, so nobody has a reason to sell you a bigger project than you need. The truck has our name on it, the paperwork has our NJ HIC registration number on it, and we take our boots off or cover them at the door.
The first ten minutes: you talk, we listen
- What bugs you about the space now, and what you want it to do
- Photos of anything you've seen and liked — a phone full of screenshots is perfect
- Your real budget. Tell us the number. We build the quote at that tier and tell you where the cheaper version is honestly fine and where it isn't
- When you need it done, and anything on the calendar that matters — a baby, a graduation party, the in-laws in August
- Who lives here: kids, pets, someone who works nights, a parent with a walker
- Any quotes you already have. Bring them out. We'll match the scope line by line
The next 30 to 45 minutes: we inspect like builders
This is the part that makes the price real. We don't guess at what's behind a wall from the couch.
We measure the room, open the cabinet under the sink, check the shutoff valves and the water pressure, look at the drain, and go to the basement to see the joists, the pipes and the vent stack under the room. We look at the electrical panel to see what's free. In a 1950s or 60s house in Bergen or Passaic, we're looking for galvanized pipe, old wiring and a subfloor that's been wet before.
Moisture on the walls, the sump and where it discharges, the ceiling height, where an egress window can go, what the stairs will allow, what's in the panel, where the waste line runs for a bathroom.
From the ground, from a ladder and from the attic. Layers on the roof, the decking from below, the flashing, the sills under the windows, the corners of the siding where rot hides.
The panel and its label, the service size, the gas meter, the ductwork if there is any, and what the equipment nameplate says. A generator or an EV charger starts with a load list, written on the spot.
Your survey, the setbacks, where the foundation can go, how the roof lines tie in, and what the town is going to want to see. Whatever the job, we photograph all of it — and you get the photos.
The last 15 minutes: your itemized price, on the spot
Before we leave, you have a written price with every line visible: demo and haul-away, permits, the materials by tier, plumbing and electrical, the finishes, cleanup, and a timeline with a finish date. If there are two ways to do it, you get both priced side by side — the same layout and the layout change, tile and premium panels, vinyl and fiber cement.
Then we go through it line by line and explain what's in it and why. The number is fixed. It can't change without your signature on a written change order — that's the Price-Lock Guarantee, and it's printed in your contract along with the No-Surprise Guarantee. There's no deposit. You pay as the work gets done, and you hold the final payment until we walk the finished job together.
What you keep even if you never hire us
If we're not a fit, keep the plan and use it. We mean that.
- The measurements and the photos
- The itemized price, line by line
- A plain-English project plan and the expected timeline
- Our honest take on what your house needs and what it doesn't
- Any written competitor quote matched scope-for-scope, so you can see what the other number left out
What we won't do
- No "today-only" price. The number on your sheet is the same tomorrow, next week and next month.
- No three-hour presentation, no binder of awards, no calling your spouse in from the other room.
- No financing pitch. If you want to spread the cost, ask; we'll talk about it in plain English, without pressure.
- No deposit ask. Ever.
- No follow-up calls from a "manager" with a better number. There's no better number. There's the number.
How to get the most out of the hour
- Have everyone who decides at home, so you're not relaying questions later
- Clear under the sink, in front of the panel, and the way to the attic hatch
- Know your must-haves versus nice-to-haves before we arrive
- Tell us the real budget, not the number you think a contractor wants to hear
- Ask the six questions from our contractor-hiring guide. We like them
What happens after
Take as long as you like. When you're ready, you sign the contract with the price, the scope, the schedule and the guarantees in it. We file the permits, order materials on your approval, and put the delivery dates in the schedule before any demo starts. From the first day of work you get a photo update text every workday. Same crew, same foreman, until we walk the finished job together and you sign off.
Questions people ask next
How long does the consultation take?
About an hour for most projects. A kitchen with layout changes or an addition can run 90 minutes, because there's more to measure and more to look at in the basement and the attic. If it needs to be shorter, tell us when you book and we'll plan for it.
Do I need to be home?
Yes — it's your house and your decisions. Someone who can answer questions and make choices should be there. If two of you decide together, it saves a week of back-and-forth to have both of you in the room.
Is it really free, even if I don't hire you?
Yes. No fee, no obligation, and you keep the measurements, the photos, the itemized price and the plan. We'd rather you have an honest number in your hand than a reason to avoid calling.
Can you give me a price over the phone or from photos?
For an emergency repair, text a photo and we'll give you a ballpark so you know what you're dealing with. For a project, the fixed price comes after we've measured and inspected — because the number you sign is the number you pay, and we can't promise that from a photo.
